Abstract

An ultrastructural study using the Freeze-etching technique for the B .C.G. and H37R, strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is
reported. Cell wall differences were encountered: Superficial filaments of the avirulent strain are disposed along the longitudinal axis, whereas those of the virulent one do not follow any defined pattern. In this strain the external surface is more compact and a circular pattern of filaments is occasionally seen. Plasmatic membrane also showed differences between the two strains; in the virulent strain, on the outer surface of the membrane, groups of particles were observed, but at the avirulent strain these particles were not seen. These results are discussed in regard to their pathological meaning.
