Abstract

Catalytic processes are widely used in the chemical and biotechnological industries, especially in the petrochemical, fine chemical and pharmaceutical. In Cuba, with a modest chemical industry, catalytic processes play an important role in most of its productions, specifically in the petroleum and basic chemical industries. Catalysis is also present in the control of emanations, in biotechnological and pharmaceutical production and in the food industry. 80% of chemical products pass through at least one catalytic stage during their synthesis. Catalytic processes are becoming more and more important in environmental chemistry and in food production, where both conventional and enzymatic catalysis They play a leading role. The foregoing shows that advances in science and technology have placed in the hands of contemporary society thousands of products obtained by catalytic means, ranging from petroleum derivatives to the most different active pharmaceutical ingredients. The production volumes and the complexity of some of these products impose new challenges in the search for procedures that are more economical from the point of view of energy and safer for the protection of tion of man and the environment.
