Abstract

Rená-Antoine Ferchault de Ráaumur is an example of those scientists that made important contributions in many subjects but are remembered by only one. Nowadays Ráaumur is remembered almost exclusively by his thermometer, although during his life he was one of the most prominent 1 ench scientists. From the time he became a member of the Academic des Sciences until his death, he made significant contributions in the areas of geometry, the strength of cordage, the development of the shells of testaceous animals, the coloring matter of turquoise gems, the manufacture of iron, steel, tinplate, and porcelain, the manufacture of thermometers, the instincts and habits of insects in general, and bees in particular, and the digestion process.
