Abstract

The genus Eugenia belongs to the family Myrtaceae. It is worldwide represented by more than 600 botanical species from the tropics, which are distributed mainly in America and Asia. The essential oils were obtained from the leaves of Eugenia axillaris (Sw.) Willd., Eugenia cristata Wr. and Eugenia rocana Britt. & Wils. from the western region of Cuba, two of them (E. cristata y E. rocana) are endemics. The oil yields were 0.4 (E. axillaris), 3.4 (E. cristata) y 0.1 (E. rocana). The essential oils were examined by capillary GC and combined GC-MS. Major components were found: guaiol (35.4 %) in E. axillaris oil, limonene (45.0 %) in E. cristata oil, and caryophyllene oxide (57.7 %) in E. rocana oil.
