Abstract

The development of the synthesis of steroids has been stimulated by the diversity of therapeutic applications that these compounds present, by their high commercial value and their stability in the market for more than 40 years. Each family of steroidal drugs (estrogens, androgens, progestins, and corticosteroids) was discovered during investigations of the mammalian endocrine system. The infinitesimal amounts of these agents present in the tissues made the initial endocrinological work difficult, so it was obvious that other sources should be sought that could define the strategy for obtaining them in the future. The powerful biological effect of these compounds, as well as the complexity of their structure, represented a stimulus for the community of synthetic chemists, based on this objective.
