Abstract

The role of ethyl sulphate as catalyst in the polymerization of N-vinykarbazole was studied in closed and open systems using 1,2-dichloroethane as solvent, at room temperature. It was found that this compound is a very poor initiator since it must be used in very high concentrations in arder to obtain a significant amount of polymer. Water is a powerful poisoning agent in this system since traces of moisture completely inhibit the polymerization. An interpretation of the results is given, based on ester initiation, but the possibility of impurities being the real catalyst can not be discarded.
