Abstract

In tite last years, various criteria have been pro­posed for the reference element selection as a problem of main concern in analytical atomic emission spectroscopy. However, due to its peculiarities, it is not possible to know a priori which one is the best to achieve the desired figures of merit in a particular ana­lytical procedure. With that purpose, five selectioo methods were compared as part of the research work that is carried out by our lab for the determination of trace elements in copper minerals. The efficiency of the methods under study was evaluated using the rela­tive standard deviation and the mean value of the analytical pairs in two different synthetic matrixes. lt was shown that tbe selection is strongly affected by the method because each one takes into ac­count only a part of the process that determines the behavior of the analytical pairs. It was also observed that with the scatter-diagram method the best precision and accuracy is obtained. The use of correlated signals demonstrated the possibility of improvi11g the precision and the nature of the limitations of the selection methods.
