Abstract

An X-Ray Fluorescence analysis procedure was developed for the determination of As, Fe, Sb, Ca and Si in arsenical
sludge. The samples were prepared as a mixture with soluble starch in a 4:1 ratio; they were pressed at 20 MPa for
30 s on a H3BO3 backing, obtaining tablets of about 40 mm in diameter, resistant to handling. In the X-ray excitation
source, tubes with W and Rh anodes were used, operated at 40 kV and 40 mA. The measurements were carried out in
vacuum. To carry out the calibration, synthetic standards were used and the inter-elemental effects were corrected
using the Lucas-Tooth and Pyn.e model. In addition, the selection criteria for interfering elements proposed by
Plesch was used and it was found that for As, Fe, Sh and Si, it is not necessary to consider all the elements in the
sample during calibration.
