Abstract

The objective of this research was the provoked thermal aging, in the
presence of oxygen of the air, on three samples of experimental rubbers specially
conceived and elaborated for this research. The results may contribute to establish a
nondestructive physical method from which we can obtain information about the
technical traits of a rubber article that may be related to the data on the levels of
transformations suffered by such articles as a consequence of the processes that
convey the loss of their useful properties. This evaluation is normally carried out
through classical physical and mechanical methods which are not convenient due
to the necessity of destroying the rubber articles to fulfill the evaluation. To achieve
the objectives of this level, a method of thermal aging in assay chamber was used,
based on the effect of the increase of temperature on the speed of the chemical reactions
mainly of thermal oxidation in chemical reactions which take place in those
systems made of substances from organic nature (polymeric materials and different
organic additives) in the air presence. During a temperature range from 80 to 120 ºC
it was established the behaviour of each of the rubber samples. This behavior was
established through the changes on the main physical and mechanical parameters
selected to indicate the transformations that occurred on the rubbers after the temperature
action during the recommended period by the established norms.
