Abstract

Interpenetrated polymer networks of chitosan (QUI), polyacrylic acid (PAAc) and polyacrylamide (PAAm)
were prepared by the radical polymerization of acrylamide (AAm) and acrylic acid (AAc) in the presence of chitosan.
Polymerization was initiated with 1,2 · 10-3 mol/L (NH4)2S2O8 using N,N,N’,N’–tetramehylenediamine as activator in a 1 : 1
ratio with respect to the persulfate, at 50 ºC . 3.3 · 10-3 mol/L N,N’-methylenebisacrylamide was used as crosslinking agent.
The materials obtained were characterized by electron scanning microscopy, and the relative composition of the polymers
in the systems were confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. The ratios of the absorbances at 1 670, 1 662 and 1 082 cm–1,
A1662/A1082 and A1670/A1082 were used as indicative of the relative composition of AAm and AAc in these materials. The
equilibrium swelling capacity of the terpolymers (QUI/PAAc/PAAm) turned out to be highly dependent on the compositions.
The characteristic systems modified considerably after treatment with NaOH(ac) 1 mol/l. The systems increased their
swelling and they became more sensitive to the medium pH than the non-treated QUI/PAAc/PAAm systems. These behaviors
were discussed in terms of the structural changes taking place during the NaOH(ac) treatment. The hydrogels are
referred to as “intelligent systems” because they are sensitive to temperature and ionic strenght.
