Abstract

Synthesis of methyl esters of fatty acids with zeolite from
Palmarito ore as catalyst is described. This mineral contains 85 % of
mordenite. The crystalline structure of mordenite is constituted of pores and
channels whose dimensions and the active sites which are present inside,
particulary in acidic form, make possible the obtainment of several products.
The zeolite is modified with 1, 2 or 3 mol/L HCl solution and the best
procedure for catalysis is determined by the yield and quality of the obtained
products: methyl esters of fatty acids. Esterification of fatty acids with lower
alcohols has great significance in several industrial process. The reactions
of fatty acids with methyl alcohol normally is catalyzed by mineral or by
organic acids or by acidic resins. Sterification reaction of lauric, myristic,
palmitic, stearic and oleic acid with methyl alcohol at the boiling point, (65 ºC),
at normal pressure for four hours by using acidic modified zeolite as catalyst
is described
