Abstract

Foam sponge fragments were implanted into the retro stcrnal cavity of dogs. Extractions were perforrned from the seventh to twenty-seventh week after the implantations, and this explanted material was processed for optical and electronmicroscopical studies. Histochemistry to detect elastic fibres was al'so performed. The characteristic cells from an aseptic, chronic inflammation have been observed, as welI as severa] degrees of fibrosis that varied directly with the implantation time. Probable fibrc-producing cells were detected. Impermeability of the tube after 25 weeks of implantation and its use for sustiluting hollow organs as wel´ as the presence of the different kinds of cells there encountered havc been discussed.
