Abstract

In vitro studies have confirmed that after a brief exposure of human blood to ozone, an activation of monocytes and lymphocytes is produced, probably due to the oxidation of the components of the membrane of these mononuclear cells, which induces the production of cytokines with activity regulatory on the immune system, such as interferon (IFNg), tumor necrosis factor (TNFa), interleukins (IL-1, IL-2, IL-6), granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and probably other functions of the immune system are favored.1 In addition, the stimulation of immunological mechanisms such as the activation of phagocytosis and the production of immunoglobulins has been reported.
