Abstract

In a previous study,' it was shown that the ethanolic extract of Cuban red propolis exhibited *antioxidant properties in vitro and in vivo, which were attributed to its ability to scavenge alkoxyl and superoxide radicals. Likewise, it was thought that this sequestering effect was related, at least in part, to the presence of flavonoids and polyphenols, as has been described for propolis from other countries. 2 In subsequent chromatographic studies (gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry) on the chemical composition of this propolis, it was shown that it was essentially made up of a mixture of 1:4 naphthoquinones and a family of other quinones such as anethole, methylisoeugenol, etemicine , etc.
