Abstract

Applications of nuclear radiation in the most varied aspects of science have greatly increased in recent years. Its apJ)lications in agricultural tasks are among the most important By using its techniques, it has been possible to obtain new plant varieties with improved quality superior to the parents, greater nutrient content, etc. Such radiations have also been used to stimulate plant growth by irradiating the seeds befare sowing. The effect of such stimulaw tion is normally observed in the first generation and residual effects in later generations, in which better yield and higher protein content have been obtained. We irradiated seeds of Black Beens (Phaseolus Vulgaris) Cueto 25-9 with 12% of moisture content, with Co60 Gamma Rays. Laboratory test in germinators and field experiments were carried out. The determined lethal <lose was 40 Kr. The stimulating <lose, in which better yield than that of the non-irradiated seeds and increase in protein content were obtained, was also determined. The stimulatin <lose of 800r gave up to 31 % of in-crease in production yield in grains The Protein-stimulating <lose varied in the treatments studied in the different experiments. Further work with the aim of checking the obtained results in larger parcels of land is recomended.
