Abstract

It is known that quinidine blocks differnt ionic conductan­ccs in neuronal membranes, far this rcason it was choosed this drug in arder to investigative the involvcmcnt of different ions in epilep­togenesis. The effect of topical application of quinidine u pon the penicil­lin cortical focus was studied in 40 rats. In the whole range of doses tested (100 to 200 pmol/L) the drug revchoibly rcduced the amplitude of pcnici!!in-inducc spikcs. "Iñe maximun cffect was at 1 OOOpmol/L. It is rcportcd that al this concentration in molluscan neurons the cakium conductance is hlocked. At 1DOµmo1/L the spike amplitude was reduccd in a lowcr degrcc. At this concentration on!y the potassium conductance is considcrably blocked. These resulis can be intcrprctcd as a ncw cvidcncc far thc role of potassium and calcium in epilepsy. being this last ion thc most important, in connection w11h its role as a main rcgulator uf ncoronal cxcitabilit)'.
