Trends in patent development for antiandrogen products for the treatment of prostate tumors
Abstract
The prostate tumors have been recognized as one of the main health problems in men since the 50 years of age, mainly the prostate cancer that is increasing worldwide and closely to the incidence of lung cancer in many countries. Cuba is not away from these problems and those trends have the same similarity. The searching for therapeutic choices with benefit both benign and malign tumors of such masculine gland is one of the main goals of the scientific community, taking an important place the development of molecules able to block or to modulate the androgenic behavior of the patient. In order to reduce the impact of the androgens
in the tumor biology there are many therapeutic candidates grouped in the following mechanism of actions in developing or in biological testing: Blockers of androgen synthesis (such as LHRH agonists and analogs), 5a-reductasa inhibitors and androgenic receptor antagonists. This work was developed under the aim of justifying resources to be used in this research direction; here , some general matters of antiandrogen development, patents and market trends are exposed. The occurrence of a global tendency accented significantly for 5 years, was demonstrated toward the increase of the protection with patents of procedures and products related to antiandrogens. The United States and Europe stand out as the main generators and also as the high-priority markets of those products. The 5a-reductasas and receptors for androgens are identified as the main therapeutic targets. For all these reasons, it is considered feasible to guide resources toward s the research and development of compounds that spread to reduce or to block the influence of the androgens on the prostate tumors.
