Abstract

The rheologic behavior and the stability of polyvinylacetate (PVAc) at temperatures higher than 100 oC was studied. This was achieved by means of viscosimetric measurements and the study of the thermolysis of the polymer in a mass spectrometer. It was stated that the polymer is thermally stable at temperatures between 100 and 120oC and that the presence of occluded water in the polymer in this temperature range does not affect sensibly its stability. The humid polymer presents structural viscosity. This behavior is not evident for the dry polymer. A strong dependence of the viscosity from the presence of occluded water was observed for low contents of water in the polymer. For higher contents the dependence is very weak and the values of the viscosity are relatively low. The value of the activation energy of the viscous flow was determined. The results obtained allow to define a purification and drying process for PVAc.
