Abstract

Florel or Eletrel used as a growth regulator as a fruit ripening and other aplications, has 2.chloroethanephosphonic acid as active agent. This acid (CEPA), breaks down in the presence of a base and within the plant tissue, to form ethylene with an apparent release of chloride and phosphonate. The regulatory effects have been attributed to the liberation of ethylcne. That the gas involved is ethylene was determined by gas chromatography. This method is not easily avail­able in our experimental conditions when this product is applied to plantation. This paper describes a rapide procedure for the determina· tion of chloride from CEPA by the Mohr method for values of pH higher than 6.5 and by the Volhard method for pH lower than. 6.5. Differents values of concentration of Cl-1 produced were found acCording to the amount of CEPA by means of gaseous chromatography ·of ethylene. The suggested method is rapid, simple and it requires neither high analyst nor expensive apparatus. Considerations about the cinetic of the reaction of CEPA decomposition in the laboratory conditions are included.
