Abstract

The emulsioned paints are susceptible to microbial decay. In order to inhibit the effect produced by microbial growth, it is necessary to add any type of preservative product to emulsioned industrial paints. The preservant antibacterial and antifungic action of ACTICIDE RS in emulsioned paints was determined. Phenol-resistant strains of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus was used as inocula in wet paint samples containing 0 .1, 0 .15 and 0 .3% concentrations of ACTICIDE. Samples of paint without any antimicrobial preserve and with MERGAL K-7 at 0 .3 % were also tested. All the tests were made with three replications for sample paints. The Minimal Inhibitory and Bactericidal Concentrations of ACTICIDE were determined
and they were identical (0,01%), but the preservant effect of the product in the paints was 0 .15%. The antifungal action of ACTICIDE in dry paint against Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus versicolor, Penicillium notatum, Cunninghamella sp. Trichoderma viride and Paecilomyces terricolans were evaluated. MERGAL K-7 did not show any inhibitory effect at the concentration used in the paint.
None of the preserve showed any antifungal activity in dry paints versus the fungal strains employed at concentrations tested.
