Abstract

Glutathione (GSH) is the most abundant non-protein thiol in hepatocytes and plays an important role in the
detoxification of xenobiotics.' The toxicity of various chemicals or their metabolites is associated with a
reduction in glutathione. Diethyl maleate (DEM) is a compound that is regularly used to deplete glutathione
by conjugating it with DEM in a reaction catalyzed by glutathione transferase. 3 Lobenzarit disodium (LBZ),
is an immunomodulatory drug which has been widely used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and in the
authors' laboratory, it has been shown to have hepatoprotective properties in hepatotoxicity induced by
CCL43 and paracetamol.
