Abstract

Wastewaters from a touristic resort were treated by an anaerobic fixed bed reactor and posterior filtration comparing two high rate filters, one packed with sand and the other with natural zeolite. The removal of total and faecal coliforms, Streptococcus and Pseudomonas was mo11itored. In the biological treatment, in spite of the variations made in the tlow at the entrance of the reactor, the reduction of total and faecal coliforms attained values higher than 98 %, slightly better than Streptococcus and Pse11do-111011as. It was found microbiological removal was good and similar for sand and zeolite packed filters. In this case, the pressure losses and the behaviour of the other parameters set the choice of the best ki.nd of granular material.
