Abstract

Fatty liver as clinical entity has conceited a remarkable interest. From a non relevant ultrasonographic finding
it has been passed to be an important health problem because of its frequency, prognosis and insufficiency of proposed
pharmacologic treatments. Obesity, insulin resistance and hyperlipidaemia are the most important risk factors, besides
other risk factors, not always possible to detect with non invasive methods. Two phases can be distinguished: First hit
(when fatty infiltration has been not yet produced any structural change and, Second hit, when appear tissue damages.
Though, the precise diagnostic is indubitably the histological examination, ultrasound and others non invasive methods
are the most used together with clinical laboratory determinations. The most extended treatment is the reduction of
body weight by diet and physical exercise. Also a number of medications had been assayed, but its effectiveness results
doubtful or insufficient. It can bee explained because the effects of the drug could not be in relation with the biochemical
phenomena taking place in the appropriate phase of the disease. Probably drugs combinations or medicaments with
wider spectrum could be needed to obtain better results.
